  • TP Mayoral Activity- FORUM by Detroit Parks Coalition and Bridge Detroit

    July 24, 2025  9:45 pm - July 25, 2025  12:15 am
Palmer Park Bandshell 1555 W Seven Mile Road

    Good afternoon, Detroit mayoral candidates,

My name is Bryce Huffman and I'm the Engagement Editor for BridgeDetroit, a nonprofit newsroom in Detroit that is focused on giving hyperlocal news and information to Detroiters.

We're partnering with the Detroit Parks Coalition to put on a mayoral candidate forum, and we'd love it if you all could be there! Attached you'll find the formal invitation, and below you'll find all the details you'd need to know ahead of time. Take some time to review the "rules of engagement" section, please!

Moderators: BridgeDetroit's Malachi Barrett and Bryce Huffman

    Date: July 24, 2025.

Time: Please plan to arrive by 5:45 p.m. Forum begins promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Location: Palmer Park Bandshell, 1555 W Seven Mile Rd

Parking: Available at the 12th Precinct, DEN, and along 7 Mile. There is also overflow parking on Pontchartrain and at the Palmer Park Community House (1121 Merrill Plaisance St, Detroit, MI 48203), but those will require a short walk through the park to get to the bandshell.

Topics: Parks, public safety, preserving and creating third spaces in the city, transportation, development in neighborhoods, investment from businesses and developers, etc.

    Rules of engagement:

    - This is a forum, not a debate. We're planning a respectful event where each candidate focuses on what sets themselves apart and what they bring to the table. The moderators will interrupt any arguments and prevent candidates from speaking over each other.

-No statements of a personal nature about another candidate will be tolerated. A person’s public record– not her/his character– may be examined.

-Everything said on the stage is on the record.

-Specific questions will not be provided ahead of time. Questions have been solicited from residents and parks coalition members ahead of time and have been screened for relevance by BridgeDetroit staff.

    - The order of speaking will be determined by drawing numbers and the order will alternate or rotate thereafter. Occasionally, the order will be randomized.

    - You will have 2 minutes at the beginning to introduce yourself and talk about why you are the best choice for mayor.

-You will have 2 minutes at the end for a closing statement

-To make sure we can get to as many questions as possible, answers will be limited to 2 minutes. Someone will monitor a clock and hold up a sign when you are at 30 seconds remaining and when the time is up.

-This forum will focus on issues. BridgeDetroit and Detroit Parks Coalition are nonprofit organizations. We must give each candidate on the ballot an equal opportunity to participate, and we do not make endorsements.

-The names of those who do not respond or choose not to appear will be announced.

    - Candidates may bring speaker notes to remind them of key points to make. However, briefing books are not permitted. Display props are not allowed.

-Campaign signs, materials and clothing are allowed at the event in areas designated for campaigning.

PLEASE RSVP to Bryce Huffman at bhuffman@bridgedetroit.com or (313) 820-8023 by July 10.
